The Bataan Peninsula (the last battle of world war 1 gadgets) page 2

Points and Pockets

This tells the "truer story" behind the "forgotten war" of Bataan and Corregidor -- savage battles that violently hurled falsely reassured Filipinos and an ill-prepared Philippines into the Second World War in the Pacific. Produced by the Department of National Defense of the Philippines and the Philippines Veterans Affairs Office this series of videos documents the outstanding courage, heroism and nobility of Filipinos regardless the inevitable fall of the country to the unrelenting Imperial Japanese military juggernaut. An outcome inevitably irreversible despite the fierce resistance of the mostly Filipino and American defenders as the United States government relegated succor to the loyal but unwarily naive Philippine Commonwealth as secondary to America's commitment to her European allies.

This historical account belies many of the myths that have long distorted the realities of Philippine American relations and a must for the serious student of history, geopolitics and military matters. On a lighter yet equally revealing note it also gives a glimpse of pre-war Manila and Philippine society.

Twenty-fifth Infantry. 25th Infantry returning from Mt. Arayat Filmed March 23, 1900, in the Philippine Islands,
following the 25th Infantry's participation at the battle of
Mt. Arayat in January 1900.

Clip 4
The occasion of Admiral Dewey's arrival in New York Harbor, Wednesday, September 27th, 1899 on Riverside Drive; showing Naval Brigade of North Atlantic Fleet, followed by Schley,
Sampson, Miles, and other celebrities.

Clip 5
Seventy-first Regiment, Camp Wyckoff Filmed ca. Sept. 1898 in Camp Wikoff at Montauk Point, Long Island. Of the
thousand and more men who left New York for the Cuban Campaign, scarcely three hundred were able to shoulder their
rifles to march before the Biograph camera at Camp Wikoff. The picture shows many of the companies reduced to seven or eight men, and the whole regiment, rank and file is in a sad
condition.

Clip 6
United States : 1899
A view of the arch from Fifth Avenue, the day after the great Dewey parade, showing the crowd of sightseers, traffic, etc.

Clip 7
June 1899 Shows a group of sailors and an officer at the stern. The flag runs out in a ball to the end of the staff,
and, at the signal, is broken. Proudly the stars and stripes wave in the morning breeze, while the officer salutes. A very pretty picture of man-o-war life.

Clip 8
United States cruiser "Raleigh" 1899
A panoramic view of the "Raleigh" as she lies at anchor off 27th Steet, North River, April 17, 1899. Captain Coghlan stands among a group of officers near the bridge. The
"Raleigh" fired the first gun at Manila, and is the first boat of the Pacific Squadron visiting New York. All the details of the famous battleship are clearly shown.

Clip 9
United States 1899; War hero Adm. George Dewey, famous for his victory at Manila Bay early in the war, was filmed
during his trip back to the United States at Gibraltar in early September 1899.

The Spanish-American War was a military conflict between Spain and the United States that began in April 1898. Hostilities halted in August of that year, and the Treaty of Paris was signed in December.

The war began after the American demand for Spain's peacefully resolving the Cuban fight for independence was rejected, though strong expansionist sentiment in the United States motivated the government to target Spain's remaining overseas territories: Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam and the Caroline Islands.[dubious -- discuss][2][not in citation given]

Riots in Havana by pro-Spanish "Voluntarios" gave the United States a reason to send in the warship USS Maine to indicate high national interest. Tension among the American people was raised because of the explosion of the USS Maine, and "yellow journalism" that accused Spain of extensive atrocities, agitating American public opinion. The war ended after decisive naval victories for the United States in the Philippines and Cuba.

Only 109 days after the outbreak of war, the Treaty of Paris, which ended the conflict, gave the United States ownership of the former Spanish colonies of Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam.
