Basketball Tactics: Greenday

The Play

The Boston Celtics franchise has been energized by the addition of perennial All-Stars Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to go along with offensive stalwart Paul Pierce. All three are quick athletic players, and Garnett and Pierce can score in the paint and on the perimeter. Look for the Celtics to spread the floor and reduce the defense’s ability to double on any of these weapons.

Point guard Rajon Rondo (9) initiates this set for the Boston Celtics by taking the ball to the left wing. James Posey (41) and Kevin Garnett (5) set a double screen for Paul Pierce (34) who is located on the right block. Pierce (34) cuts over the top of the Garnett (5) screen while his defender slips through the middle. Garnett (5) rolls back to the elbow of the free throw line.

The Celtics now have Paul Pierce (34) isolated on the left side of the floor. Rajon Rondo (9) enters the ball to Pierce (34) and cuts through to clear the side as Ray Allen (20) and Kevin Garnett (5) spot-up on the right side of the court. Paul Pierce (34) faces up on his defender and attacks the middle.

The defense attempts to help on Paul Pierce (34) but they can’t over commit because Kevin Garnett (5) and Ray Allen (20) are spotted-up and located in Pierce’s (34) vision. Paul Pierce (34) passes the ball out to Garnett (5). The defense tries to recover. Pierce (34) re-posts and Kevin Garnett (5) finds him for the strong move inside.
