Basketball Tactics: Filling it Up

The Play

The Golden State Warriors have their up-tempo game working effectively. Led by the duo of Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson the Warriors are presently 2nd in the league in scoring and feature six players averaging double figures per game. They are athletic, shoot the ball well and take advantage of mismatches and defensive lapses.

Baron Davis (5) dribbles the ball up the right side of the floor for the Golden State Warriors and their quick hitting offense. Monta Ellis (8) and Al Harrington (3) sprint up the left side of the court while Stephen Jackson (1) establishes position near the right hash. Andris Biedrins (15) settles above the key area. Each player is either above the free throw line or outside of the 3-point line.

The floor is now spread for the Warriors to attack quickly. They can take advantage of dribble penetration opportunities, cut to the basket, or set screens for 3-point shots. Baron Davis (5) flips the ball to Stephen Jackson (1) on the right wing and then makes a shallow cut.

Andris Biedrins (15) and Al Harrington (3) set a double screen in the key for Stephen Jackson (1). Jackson (1) dribbles off the screens. The defender on Stephen Jackson (1) makes the mistake of going under the Biedrins (15) screen. Once Jackson (1) is at the top of the circle, he is able to knock down a wide open 3-point shot.
