Ray Allen re-affirmed his membership in the "Big Three." Kendrick Perkins petitioned to make it the "Big Four."
Allen scored 29 points and Perkins added 18 and 16 rebounds - all postseason highs - as the Boston Celtics held home court Wednesday with a tense 106-102 victory over the Detroit Pistons in the pivotal fifth game of the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Celtics withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Pistons and improved to 10-1 at home as they moved within one win of their first trip to the NBA Finals in 21 years.
Allen had been showing signs of snapping out of a postseason funk and finally broke through, making 5-of-6 3-pointers. He scored 16 points in the third quarter, when Boston opened a 17-point lead, and drilled a clutch jumper with 1:02 remaining after Detroit had pulled within a point.
Perkins set the early tone with his strong interior play. He had 12 points and 13 boards in the first half, when the Celtics turned an eight-point deficit into a 52-46 halftime lead. Boston is 3-0 in this series when Perkins grabs at least 10 rebounds.
Kevin Garnett scored 33 points, Paul Pierce added 16 and Rajon Rondo handed out 13 assists for the Celtics, who shot 51 percent and held a 42-25 advantage on the glass.
Chauncey Billups scored 26 points, Richard Hamilton added 25 and Rasheed Wallace 18 - all on 3-pointers - for the Pistons, who shot 46 percent but committed 30 fouls.
Game 6 is at Detroit on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Pistons are the only team in the postseason that has not lost consecutive games.
