I’ve always thought the defining moment for this era of Pistons basketball was their Game 6 win at New Jersey in 2004 – the game after New Jersey won in triple overtime at The Palace to take a 3-2 series lead. The Pistons weathered a 13-4 New Jersey run to start the game and had to make huge shots in the final minute, getting them from Hamilton and Wallace on precisely run offensive sets. I was reminded of that night on this night, with the Pistons again defying what seemed inevitable momentum from the home crowd in a place not many have had success all season – and no one in the playoffs until now. Yeah, it was a lot like that night four years ago. And that year seemed to turn out OK.
Number crunch
6
The difference in the number of free throws the Pistons made compared to Celtics – and also the margin of victory. Both teams made 35 baskets – the Pistons in 71 attempts, Boston in 72 tries. Both teams made five 3-pointers – the Pistons in 10 tries, Boston in 19. And both teams sizzled at the free-throw line. But while Boston made 22 of 25, the Pistons made 28 of 32. Hamilton, Billups and Stuckey combined to make 20 of 22.
